Post Colonial Theory https://www.voice-online.co.uk/

 Who is the audience?

The audience for the website is mature due to its serious tone similar to other news websites but using its articles and even thumbnail images they attempt to encompass an audience that is made up of multiple minorities in this case the black community in particular , the audience is mainly English speaking due to the usage of the english language as the main medium.

How have they been targeted?

News that is often big talk amongst the minority's community is presented along with their concerns in the article rather than ignoring it to pander to the bigger white demographic, for example news related to Black History Month and activist raising concerns important to the black community is presented as seen by the headlines "Cop Cash Giveaway In Black History Month" and "2022 Black Unity Bike Ride Is a Huge Success", the thumbnail images shows mainly black men and women when it is appropriate to the context which means there is no white washing occurring as The Voice could have used images of white people to represent minorities.

They also show people of color (black in particular) achieving success as in the article "Malorie Blackman Shares PEN Pinter Prize 2022 With Dr Abdujalil Al-Singace", this is a total opposite to the media's traditional portrayal of black people which has been largely negative where they are portrayed as criminals and poor which might create a double consciousness in black viewers which does not appear in this website. In here it appears as if blacks are treated as "normal" where no markers such as the way they dress and what they do are portrayed are meant to highlight the fact that they are black and thus different to whites who do not do such things thus no phenomenon of othering occurs where blacks are seen as abnromal, here they run charities and win awards not criminality, here they dress like everyone does where there is no news article in sight that shows a hoodie or stereotypical urban outfit.

How does Post Colonialism fit into this?

Post Colonialism occurs when eurocentric views are shown in the media where europeans or whites in general are shown to be "superior" and "civilized" whether it be due to mannerisms and technology, this occured as European powers lost the grip of their far flung colonies. Post Colonialism fits into The Voice where the voice may not present post colonial ideas but instead juxtaposes it in response to how the mainstream media is filled with Post Colonial ideals that portray the black minority as inferior, traditionally media outlets would prefer having a european face on article thumbnails and advertisements, media outlets like The Sun tends to portray dark skinned immigrants and peoples in general in a negative light which creates a double consciousness in those dark skinned viewers who do not see themselves as they are in the media, thus The Voice is an attempt to fulfill this niche's need for better esteem by presenting non-Eurocentric views (News on Black History Month and Activism) along with stories where blacks achieve and create things rather than fit stereotypes.
