Is Media still Postcolonial?
Can you think of any modern examples that conform with postcolonial ideologies?
World War Z might seem as an unusual example of post colonialism, but a side plot of the movie features a brown skinned Brazilian boy being saved by Brad Pitt and his entourage after a zombie attack where they end up adopting him, in the movie the brown kid and his family are shown to be of low social standing as they live in cramped and dank apartment, the boy's parents are shown to be not competent in English despite living in the United States. During the zombie attack the brown family instantly dies in comparison to the whites who were able to fight the zombies off. This way immigrants from brazil are shown to be poorer and weaker than whites.
How do modern media texts subvert traditional representations from post-colonialism?
The movie "Yesterday" released in 2019 is a major breakthrough in european media where they star a person of color namely a person of Indian decent to be the main star of a movie, additionally the movie does not utilize stereotypes or preconceived ideals to paint the character , instead the personality of the character as an ambitious and driven musician is utilized as the main identity of the character rather than associating it with stereotypes , here the character actually appears as a person and not a costume where his "indian-ness" is emphasized. In the movie after reaching stardom he is portrayed to be loved by his fans and his partner who is a white British, a total opposite of the white male who gets an "exotic" wife which indicates the conquering nature and superior attractiveness/quality of european men.
