David Gauntlett Theory 25th October

David Gauntlett's theory suggest that we get some of our identity from media, and that in the past media representation was much simpler but today in the world of content creaters representation is no longer that simple, there is diverse. Meanwhile he has also reformed his theory to the fact that media only creates identity in small parts or reflects it, people might completely accept the identity given to them in media or have negotiated acceptance where they like aspects of a character.

Personal Identity has 4 factors:

Fluidity- where people's identity can change/is not permanent

Constructed- Mass media makes identities in the representations it offers us, the representations have a subtle influence on the audience.

Negotiated- How we negotiate the various influences (real vs reel)

Collective- satisfying the personal relationship aspect of the Users and Gratification theory where people join fandoms or groups belonging to a sector of a media audience or group identity.

The American born Ukrainian youtuber Nicholas Perry, better known under the pseudonym "Nikocado Avocado" has amassed a following for his vlog and mukbang videos.

HEALTH
Nicholas Perry and his husband Orlin Home often featured in his videos are both morbidly obese but Nikocado tries to break the perception often associated with obese people by showing him and his partner partaking in normal everyday activities which breaks the stereotype that fat people are lazy, he also displays himself confidently on social media and other plus size influencers in order to humanize the marginalized group and for people to finally accept them as "normal".

SEXUALITY
Nikocado shows to viewers that the stereotypical gay couple often portrayed in media is not like his relationship at all where Nikocado and Orlin are shown to be law abiding citizens who get along with each other, their relaitonship is not portrayed as perfect as he catches their petty fights on camera but his representation of a gay relationship distances itself from the one shown by media which often links gay couples or gay people in general to crime, drugs, and sexual promiscuity, outside of the occasional hug or touch Nikocado is far from being portrayed as a sex crazed homosexual as

It is different from the "bury your gays" trope where he does not get the misfortune that other gya characters get in movies but lives a peaceful domestic life.
