PODCASTS WE LISTENED TO IN CLASS

The 2 podcasts showed us how the presentation of the podcast and the hosts picked is important, the hosts often are similar to the audience

Dan Snow's Show featuring his kid has a more family friendly format, their usage of simpler vocabulary opposed to technical terms in The Rest is History shows it is for a younger audience.

5 Minute History's episode on Chocolate

Conversation sounds scripted and practiced which allows for the conversation to flow seamlessly without the disadvantages brought by a normal conversation such as useless repetition, stuttering, and having something

Pod Save America

starts with an advertisement, the 1st minute is mainly advertising announced by the host before starting with a musical intro and turning to the main subject. The podcast appears to be serious and for adult audiences where politics is discussed, as mentioned by Mr Nick it is sprinkled with at least 3 more ads, which shows that they exploit their mature audience as they earn money and have disposable income.

You're Dead To Me

the episode Medieval Christmas begins by announcing it was produced by the BBC and in a way self advertises their production house , they mention that they are sponsored but did not explain who they were explicitly , but their advertisement is done in seconds before slipping to the subject of medieval Christmas. They spoke over the audio track making their jingle a "bed".

Always Sunny In Philadelphia Podcast

instantly starts on with their topic without any mention of sponsors or jingles, the podcast mainly is a raw recording of their advertisement, dry of any editing and jingles or even bed, there is no introduction of the topic or even of the hosts. Only deep into the podcast do they have a transition sequence where they start reading from a script which advertises "Shipstation".

Slow Burn Roe VS Wade

starts with trigger warnings for viewers before isntantly going into the subject where a script is read from the narrator, sound effects accompanied pieces of audio from an interview from a subject where the subject spoke over the sound effect, a news broadcast's audio was also played throughout the podcast in order to tell a story thus many parts of the podcast did not happen from people speaking live but from recordings being played.

November 4 2022, Week 5

Today we did a lot of research on our thumbnail, we decided that our logo should conform to those of similar genres namely music and pop culture podcasts, but we will remove their seriousness and try to model it after some other comedy podcasts as our viewers demanded that our tone be conversational or humorous.

I researched podcasts such as Off the Pill where we were inspired by the pill logo meanwhile i have looked at Instragram accounts such as Konbini, Le Reglement, and PULS Musik to model our instagram podcast account after.

November 11 2022, Week 6

While working on the social media i had some confusion on what content we should post, i tried looking at instagram accounts of other music and pop culture based podcasts such as Dissect , their instagram account https://www.instagram.com/dissectpodcast/ features lots of artist profiles along with fun facts about them, other than that they also announce the topic for their next episodes or merch that they are selling.

They have a quite consistent color scheme where each artist or topic gets a certain theme

(Here we see a Blue-ish color scheme at the bottom, and pink and green at the top)

They also post trivias or descriptions of certain albums while posting their covers which is something we can follow, i plan to mix international albums with Indonesian ones due to the fact that our predominant audience are young Indonesians (People who filled our survey)

--------------------------
Broken Record" by Pushkin.fm
that features big names such as Rick Rubin has their advertisement in the beginning, other than that it was an example of what our podcast would be , a mix of scripted and unscripted where we would transition between the 2 styles, for the first episode we decided that the epilogue should be mainly scripted in order to immerse viewers before transitioning to our friendly  (unscripted) chatter where the hosts improvise on what they explain or discuss on the topic though sometimes they bridge out or get derailed from the conversation but not to the point where the topic becomes irrelevant which makes it sound like a naturally flowing conversation.

In their episodes discussing albums or songs such as Brockhampton's album Roadrunner: New Light New Machine they would pay excerpts from the song which would expose an audience to the song, which could be an example for our 2nd episode.

Dissect
Another good example for what our second episode should be like is the podcast "DISSECT" by Spotify, though each episode carries one theme and features songs from multiple artists and albums, due to our time constraints namely the 10 minute limit we will focus on one song which is Harry Style's Hit "As It Was", unlike Broken Record, Dissect is scripted and edited, its tone is serious and the monotone voice sounds like it belongs in a nature documentary rather than a podcast for young people centering on pop culture and music, thus we will not copy their scripted and more serious tone. additionally unlike Dissect we will not go deep into music theory and use technical jargon that our young audience would not identify, this is also due to the fact that they listen to our podcast as background noise mostly and not to learn new things thus what we deliver should not require maximum attention.

Ideas we got from Dissect was playing an excerpt from a song we were discussing for episode 2 before telling the audiences what we thought it meant and letting our conversation flow.

KIIS RADIO

Because i thought our time would be limited our intro was going to be made in a program called Audacity which has a much simpler interface,  where i would sample songs used as a "soundbed"while i talked over them announcing the theme of the episode, this was an attempt to emulate the style used by Californian radio stations that played music or talked about music and pop culture in general such as "KIIS" radio

Since the name of our podcast is LSD (Lyrics, Sounds, Decibels) i planned to make our intro emulate a person being under the influence which should be accomplished with the choice of tracks played as a sound-bed, meanwhile my original idea to read a script in a conversational voice was changed to become a more energetic and jumpy one in order to keep up with our audience's want to keep the podcast humorous or non serious as found by the survey.

I decided to sample the track "1nstagram" by the German artist Cro from the album "TRIP" for the first episode, the second episode will sample a track called "Good VIBES" from the same artists and album, i decided to slow down the songs and reverb them and cut some parts of the song that i desire and loop them before adding my voice into the intro.

Album Cover of "TRIP" (2020)

I sampled the 2 aforementioned tracks by playing them on my laptop and recording it with my phone before airdropping the back to my laptop and dropping the tracks on "Audacity to be played with", i decided on these tracks in order to emulate the sensation of being under the influence, namely when people are under the influence of drugs as depicted by media they tend to slur when talking and often speak incoherent words, slowing down the song and reverbing it creates the effect of making sound like the singer is slurring, the fact that the song texts are in German gives the audience an impression that the singer is saying incoherent things, a german track was chosen due to the similar diphthongs German and the English language have which results in them having similar pronunciations, thus making it sound like the singer is singing gibberish in English.

I had to teach myself how to slow and reverb on the spot, my main source was this youtube video by CASH2RICH called "HOW TO SLOW + REVERB (AUDACITY TUTORIAL 2020)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFSn8YxT4uI

Sampling the track "1nstagram" by looping a part i like using Audacity

" The Final Result"

In the first episode's intro i took a part of Kanye West's song Remote Control which was featured in his 2021 album "Donda" and minimized its volume and once again cut it and loop a part i wanted in order to though this time i did not change the pitch of the audio (reverb) or slow it down.

Album Cover of "Donda" (2021)

For the outro i wanted to keep the same "under the influence" concept, once again i reverb and slowed a part of a song called Rozovoye Vino made by the artist Eldzhey featuring Feduk, the reason i chose it was the same for Cro's "1nstagram" and "Good Vibe", i wanted to keep a consistent theme to the name LSD, the song which is in Russian would make it sound like the singer is spouting gibberish and the slow and amplified sound makes it sound like he is sluring.

Paul Taylor's Happy Hour

The podcast called Paul Taylor's Happy Hour has a free flowing conversation like us, we found out how we wanted to present our advertisements due to this podcast where Paul Taylor the host would make a remark or joke that would smoothly bridge into him introducing the sponsorship.
